Ebola is resurfacing in eastern Congo

New outbreak of the Ebola virus

Eastern Congo is currently experiencing an Ebola outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a public health emergency after several cases were confirmed in the provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.

In addition, 3 cases were identified in South Kivu, including 1 fatality, right in the heart of Mamas for Africa’s area of operation.

The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus. There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this variant, which makes it particularly difficult to combat.

According to recent numbers, more than 344 suspected cases have now been recorded and there have already been more than 60 fatalities. Cases have also been identified in Uganda, including among healthcare workers.

The situation is causing great concern. Rwanda and Uganda are closing their borders, which has led to panic among the population.

Mamas for Africa's area of operation remains vulnerable

South Kivu, the area where Mamas for Africa operates, remains particularly vulnerable.

The region has been plagued by violence and limited access to healthcare for years. Recently, more than 60,000 people were forced to flee due to new escalations in the conflict.

The Ebola outbreak comes on top of this humanitarian crisis. At the same time, women and girls continue to be victims of sexual violence, often without access to medical or psychological care. This is a heartbreaking reality that Mamas for Africa fights against every day.

Impact on the work of Mamas for Africa

Despite these difficult circumstances, Mamas for Africa continues to support women and girls who have been victims of sexual violence.

Thanks to the support of our donors, we can continue to provide care, guidance, and protection to women and families who are at risk of losing everything.

However, the Ebola outbreak poses additional health risks and safety challenges. Because the virus spreads through physical contact, Mamas for Africa has implemented additional protective measures:

• mandatory temperature checks at the office
• raising awareness among staff and beneficiaries about protection and prevention
• increased vigilance during fieldwork and psychosocial support
• digital consultations whenever possible instead of in-person meetings.

Even in these difficult circumstances, and with the support of our donors, Mamas for Africa remains present, close to the women and communities who need us most.
