From victim to survivor
Ombeni was raped and then rejected by her community.
Her community turned its back on her out of fear. This shows the devastating power of sexual violence as a weapon of war: the aim is to break communities, sow fear and destroy lives.
Those who should have protected her let her down. Alone, hurt and without support, her future seemed hopeless.

But Obeni did not break.
Today, Ombeni is a loving and strong mother. Together with her family, she is building a new future full of hope.
Thanks to the support of Mamas for Africa and its donors, she regained access to safety, care and guidance. She regained her strength and her future. Through Mamas for Africa's mediation with her environment, she was reintegrated into the community.
She encourages others, helps where she can, and, despite everything, sings for life again.
