1 in 3 women is victim of sexual violence in eastern Congo

In eastern Congo, sexual violence is used as a weapon of war. Moreover, gender equality is by no means a won cause.

Mineral riches

Congo, a wealthy country

Eastern Congo's mineral wealth contrasts sharply with the extreme poverty caused by the region's lingering conflict.

The violent conflict particularly affects the most vulnerable girls and women. They are a target in the struggle for resources. Sexual violence is used as a weapon of war.

The Congolese government fails to adequately protect its citizens. All kinds of militias take matters into their own hands.

Furthermore, the borders are porous. More and more countries are penetrating the area to hijack mineral resources at the expense of the local population.

Mamas for Africa helps

Mamas for Africa cannot end this conflict. But we can make society better by supporting girls and women. Thanks to your help they grow into strong survivors who take their life into their own hands, as a steppingstone to peace

Mamas for Africa is well known in eastern Congo . In 2023, we helped 2.901 women after sexual violence or serious gynecological ailments.

We provide medical care and, if necessary, we provide hospitalization. We pay for the cost of that care and operations. We also provide psychological care. Much needed: traumas need to heal. Moreover, women are often rejected from their communities. We are their only hope, especially in remote villages.

Raising awareness

Women and men: together for a better world

But Mamas for Africa is also committed to raising awareness. The entire community - women as well as men - is sensitized by our local teams. In parish centers, on village squares, in schools and on the radio, we talk about equal rights, sexual violence, rejection and positive masculinity. Taboos are broken.
